Summary
Born into a seafaring family on Nantucket, Macy turned his back on the sea after one voyage on a whaleship. He saw four businesses fail before launching the store that made his name known the world over. R.H. Macy transformed the world of shopping. His New York shop became the model for the modern department store, and by his death in 1878 was recording sales of over $1 million a year. This program tells the complete story of this retail pioneer and the empire that has grown up around his name
